Sentiment analysis is a method for identifying, classifying, and interpreting evaluative tone in text data, especially customer feedback, social media posts, reviews, survey responses, and service interactions. What is sentiment analysis?

In market research, sentiment analysis is used to understand how consumers, customers, users, or stakeholders evaluate brands, products, services, experiences, campaigns, and public issues.

The method originated in computational linguistics and opinion mining, but its practical value has expanded with the growth of digital communication. Customer opinions are now expressed not only in structured surveys, but also in online reviews, call center transcripts, chatbot conversations, open-ended questionnaire answers, app store comments, community forums, and social media discussions.   • Thematic analysis is usually more interpretive and researcher-led, while sentiment analysis is more scalable and classification-oriented.

In market research, the strongest designs often combine sentiment analysis with manual validation. Good practice in sentiment analysis includes defining the unit of analysis, separating sentiment by topic where possible, testing the model on manually reviewed examples, and reporting uncertainty rather than treating scores as absolute facts. In consumer research, it is usually more useful to ask which experiences generate sentiment, in which customer segments, through which channels, and at what stage of the journey than to report a single overall sentiment score.

Sentiment analysis is most reliable when it is connected to a clear research question and supported by triangulation. When combined with survey data, interviews, behavioral indicators, and business metrics, it helps explain not only whether customer opinion is positive or negative, but also what drives that opinion and where action is most likely to improve customer experience, brand perception, or market performance.
